Pines Forest School ethos and philosophy:

  • Pines ethos is bred from the belief that risk taking and independent led learning are necessary to successfully support the development of young people
  • Forest School is a long term process with daily interaction with natural space, not a one-off visit. Planning, adaption, observations and reviewing are integral elements. Pines offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and themselves in our safe and inclusive Forest site whilst using a range of learner centred processes to create a community for development and learning
  • Facilitators and children spend 100% of their time outside, working closely with individuals across a range of age groups and abilities creating a community which cares for each other and the environment around us
  • Children are encouraged to explore the site, build shelters, use their imagination and work together to come up with new games and activities
    • Tool usage: safely learning how to use an axe, hatchet, bushcraft knife, saw, carving tool and steel
    • Forest craft: children will practice their skills by making various items, such as a small canoe, name disk and mallets
    • Animal tracking: children will learn the basics in tracking and identifying animal tracks
    • Flora and fauna identification: basic introduction to various plants and wildlife, uses and identification
    • Fire safety: basic fire lays, how to start and maintain a fire safely
    • Risk and benefit: within our free play we encourage the children to challenge themselves
    • Additional: rope and knots, preparing a ‘leave no trace’ site, hanging hammocks and tarps, basic survival and bushcraft skills

“Come rain or shine, the children will be outside experiencing nature. We encourage the children to interact with one another and the world around them, to be brave and adventurous.“

Forest School Warsaw Poland

“Allowing children the independence to deal with challenging situations – rather than relying on the teachers. Our team is trained to avoid interrupting a child’s ‘flow’. Children are given the freedom to learn by experience.“

  • Why it’s important to get outdoors and allow your child the freedom to move around independently – a featured story by Saul Simpson, forest school leader at Pines Forest School.

“At Pines, we give children the opportunity to express themselves in a caring, relaxed and nurturing environment well away from the four walls of the classroom. Pines Forest School provides a platform to build on some of the most important learning: that which takes place outside those four walls.”
