About Pines Forest School – all weather, all season child-led outdoor learning

Pines is a British Forest School in Warsaw based on the Scandinavian all weather school model and pioneered by British OCN trained Forest School practitioners. The School works with a variety of schools and communities around Warsaw, with children as young as two, right up to fifteen. Pines runs weekend sessions in Kabaty every Saturday and Sunday. All year round you can have a birthday party in the forest with Pines in Kabaty (Powsin Park) or Bielany (Młociński Forest).

Pines Forest School ethos and philosophy:

  • Pines ethos is bred from the belief that risk taking and independent led learning are necessary to successfully support the development of young people
  • Forest School is a long term process with daily interaction with natural space, not a one-off visit. Planning, adaption, observations and reviewing are integral elements. Pines offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and themselves in our safe and inclusive Forest site whilst using a range of learner centred processes to create a community for development and learning
  • Facilitators and children spend 100% of their time outside, working closely with individuals across a range of age groups and abilities creating a community which cares for each other and the environment around us
  • Children are encouraged to explore the site, build shelters, use their imagination and work together to come up with new games and activities
    • Tool usage: safely learning how to use an axe, hatchet, bushcraft knife, saw, carving tool and steel
    • Forest craft: children will practice their skills by making various items, such as a small canoe, name disk and mallets
    • Animal tracking: children will learn the basics in tracking and identifying animal tracks
    • Flora and fauna identification: basic introduction to various plants and wildlife, uses and identification
    • Fire safety: basic fire lays, how to start and maintain a fire safely
    • Risk and benefit: within our free play we encourage the children to challenge themselves
    • Additional: rope and knots, preparing a ‘leave no trace’ site, hanging hammocks and tarps, basic survival and bushcraft skills

“Come rain or shine, the children will be outside experiencing nature. We encourage the children to interact with one another and the world around them, to be brave and adventurous.“
