Please note that Poland’s president declares a national day of mourning for late mayor of Gdańsk to be observed from Friday 5 pm until Saturday 7 pm all over Poland. The mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, died on Monday after being stabbed Sunday night at the charity event (Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy/the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity – Poland’s biggest annual fund-raiser). Flags on public buildings will be lowered to half mast; most of mass sports and cultural events will be cancelled; shops stay open according to their regular schedules. If you were planning to go to any event this weekend please double check since some of the events may be cancelled last minute.

‘The Fascinating World of Spiders and Scorpions’ – the exhibition
Location: the Palace of Culture and Science, pl. Defilad 1, entrance from Marszałkowska Street, 10 am – 7 pm, tickets: regular 18 PLN, reduced 12 PLN, family 2+2 50 PLN, children up to 4 free entrance. Facebook event in Polish. More in English and photos.

The exhibition for children ‘In King Matt’s Poland’ at POLIN – Museum of the History of Polish Jews
Location: Anielewicza 6 Street (Muranów), 10 am – 6 pm. The exhibition for children covers the questions concerning governing a state. Click here to read our tips in English (how to get there, where to have lunch etc.), and here to see the photos and read our feature story in English about visiting the POLIN Museum with children. More in English about the exhibition. In the Museum, there is a kids-dedicated space and playing area called King Matt’s Family Education Area/U Króla Maciusia (opening hours: 3 pm – 6 pm). The exhibition runs until July 1, 2019.

Theater for children in Praga
Location: Teatr Niewielki, SOHO Factory, Mińska 25 Street, building no. 74 (Praga). ‘HU HU Ha!’ – a performance for children aged 2-7: 10.30 am, 12 pm, 3.30 pm. Click here to read more in Polish and buy tickets online (39 PLN).

Theater for children in Mokotów
Location: Guliwer Theater, Różana 16 Street (Mokotów). 5.30 pm: ‘Królewna Logorea i Niedźwiedź’ dedicated to children aged 6+, 90 minutes, online tickets (31 PLN and 36 PLN), more in Polish.

Guided tour in English at The Museum of Modern Art

Sunday, January 20

Sunday trading ban – stores are closed
In January 2019, there is only one shopping Sunday: January 27. Trade ban does NOT include cinemas, restaurants, cafés, small local stores where the owner can work, stores at gas stations, flower shops, pharmacies. Shopping malls can be open but most of the stores inside will be closed (only cinemas, restaurants, pharmacies in shopping malls can be open). Open Day at Akademeia High School
Location: Akademeia High School, Ledóchowskiej 2 Street (Wilanów), 2 pm – 4.30 pm. The Open Day at Akademeia High School (a private English-speaking high school in Warsaw) is an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with the philosophy of education of the school; get to know the curriculum for 2019/2020 school year with the opportunity to talk to the teachers and the admissions team, and explore the new building. ‘Nature walk in the Wilanów gardens’ – educational walk for children and adults guided IN ENGLISH

Carnival interactive family concert and ball for children aged up to 7
Location: Kino Iluzjon Movie Theater, Narbutta 50A Street (Mokotów), 11 am – 11.50 am, online tickets (26 PLN, children under 1 free entrance). Children and adults are encouraged to wear carnival costumes. Facebook event in Polish.

Ballet Gala for children and adults by Les Ballets de Pologne
Location: Białołęka Cultural Center (Białołęcki Ośrodek Kultury), Głębocka 66 Street, 3.30 pm. Online tickets (40 PLN). The program includes fragments of the classical dance lessons, excerpts from ballets such as “Sleeping Beauty”, “Giselle”, “The Nutcracker”. Facebook event in Polish.

“Zaczarowane wycinanki / Magic Cutouts” theater for children 3+

Winter illuminations and shows – the Multimedia Fountain Park
Location: Skwer Dywizji Pancernej (the area between the Old Town and Vistula), free entrance. The holiday illuminations at the Fountain Park are on every day from 3 pm. 15-minutes shows with music on: 4 pm, 5 pm, 6 pm. More in English. The Multimedia Fountain Park winter illuminations run until January 28, 2019.

“The Royal Garden of Light” – illuminations festival in the Wilanów Garden 
Location: Wilanów Garden, Stanisława Kostki Potockiego 10/16 Street, 4 pm – 9 pm. It can be crowded during weekends, buy tickets online to skip the line.
