What to do in Warsaw in April

  • April 1

Easter Day (Wielkanoc) 
Bank holiday in Poland. All public institutions and stores are closed (except for stores at gas stations). Check out Warsaw Foodie list of restaurants open in Warsaw during Easter. Easter Sunday commemorates the resurrection of Jesus. Many people in Poland start the day with 6 am morning mass (Rezurekcja). The key event of a day – a family breakfast that starts with eating Święconka, then żurek soup (also known as white barszcz), bigos, sausage with horseradish, mazurek cake.

April Fools’ Day (Prima Aprilis)
A day of pranks and jokes. Don’t trust anyone;) Including Polish media which also participates in the celebrations with lots of fabricated stories;)

Warsaw University Botanic Garden – new season opening
Location: Warsaw University Botanic Garden (Ogród Botaniczny Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego), Aleje Ujazdowskie 4 Street (city center, next to Łazienki Garden), 10 am – 5 pm. Easter Monday (Poniedziałek Wielkanocny), “Wet Monday” (Lany Poniedziałek)
Bank holiday in Poland. Śmigus dyngus – an old tradition in Poland in which people use buckets (kids usually play with water guns) to soak each other with water. It’s safe to stay home and avoid street water fights;) Another Easter Monday tradition is to beat legs with willow branch or Palms (the ones used for Palm Sunday). Stores, malls, shopping centers closed, only some smaller local convenience stores can be open (eg. Żabka) and stores at gas stations.

  • April 2 – June 3

“Everything Is Art to Me” – an art exhibition for children
Location: Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Plac Małachowskiego 3 (city center), Tuesday – Sunday 12 pm – 8 pm, regular ticket 15 PLN, reduced ticket 10 PLN, family ticket (4 people) 18 PLN, ticket for 1 PLN dedicated to children, Thursday free entrance. More about the exhibition in English.

Animals Days – International Fair

Flowers Fair

“Grand Bazar” – Fashion Fair
Location: Dom Towarowy Bracia Jabłkowscy, Bracka 25 Street (city center), 11 am – 7 pm. Facebook event in Polish.

Karting Racing Entertainment Centre – new season opening (Kartingowy Narodowy)

Sunday trading ban – stores are closed
There are new regulations in Poland – starting from March 2018, stores can operate only 2 Sundays a month (usually first and last Sunday of the month). In April 2018, there is a trading ban on Sunday, April 1, 8, 15, and 22. In April, stores can be open on Sunday, April 29. Trade ban does NOT include cinemas, restaurants, cafés, small local stores where the owner can work, stores at gas stations, flower shops, pharmacies. Shopping malls can be open but most of the stores inside will be closed (only cinemas, restaurants, pharmacies in shopping malls can be open).

Comic Books Festival

Emirati Film Review

Antique Car Show

Outdoor Breakfast Market in Mokotów
Location: Skwer Grupy AK “Granat” (corner of Puławska and Woronicza Street), 10 am – 5 pm. Breakfast Market is a weekend picnic where you can buy local, international, and organic food, and rent a picnic blanket. Facebook event in Polish.

Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (1943)
The major celebrations of the anniversary of the uprising in Jewish ghetto in Nazi-occupied Warsaw are held at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes and POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. You may notice in Warsaw daffodils (żonkile) symbolizing the Uprising (Marek Edelman, the last leader of the Uprising, before his death in 2009, used to lay daffodils at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes every anniversary). Silent Movie Festival

Orlen Warsaw Marathon starts (at 9 am) and finishes at the National Stadium. The Marathon map.

Explore nature – educational walk guided IN ENGLISH
Location: Wilanów Palace Garden, Stanisława Kostki Potockiego 10/16 Street, 11 am – 12.30 pm, meeting point at the ticket office (small yellow building). Click here to buy tickets online (10 PLN). Art Fair (Targowisko Sztuki)
Location: Arkady Kubickiego (Kubicki Arcades) at the Warsaw Royal Castle, entrance from Grodzka Street. 11 am – 4 pm, free entrance. Outdoor Fair in the Old Town – Jarmark Zygmuntowski
