Events and things to do in Warsaw in May

  • May 1

Labor Day
Bank holiday. Stores, malls, shopping centers are closed. Only some smaller local convenience stores can be open (eg. Żabka). Stores at gas stations are open every day, 24 h. In Warsaw and other cities in Poland, there are political marches to promote workers rights. May 1 starts so-called długi weekend in Poland (long weekend) – Majówka (please note that May 2 is a regular working day, however schools are closed and people usually take a day off). People usually go out for a short vacation. Warsaw is empty and quiet during long weekends, while Polish seaside, Zakopane, and other major touristic destinations get crowded.

European Picnic & Cavalry Festival of the Polish Army 
Location: Royal Łazienki Museums and Gardens, Agrykola 1 Street. 9 am – 6 pm, free entrance to all the museum and galleries located in Łazienki. “Warsaw Picnic” – Piknik Warszawski – Food festival
Location: Garden of Iskra Club at Pole Mokotowskie, Wawelska 5 Street (Mokotów), 12 pm – 7 pm. Facebook event in Polish.

Outdoor Fair in the Old Town – “Jarmark Zygmuntowski”
Location: Warsaw Old Town, next to the Castle Square and Sigismund’s Column. The Fair is open every Friday, Saturday, on May 1 and 2 (11 am – 9.30 pm) and Monday – Thursday and Sunday (11 am – 8 pm). Facebook page in Polish.

Multimedia Fountain Park – new summer season opening 
Location: Skwer Dywizji 1 (city center). Fountains operate every day from 8.30 am until 10.30 pm. Multimedia show on May 1, 2, 3, 4, 5: 9 pm, from May 11 each Friday and Saturday at 9.30 pm (fountains, laser, music, and lights). This season: “The Bear Prince Legend”. Flag Day
Working day. Stores are open. It’s a relatively new holiday in Poland (introduced in 2004). You can notice Polish flags in some private windows and balconies as well as displayed in public institutions buildings.

Constitution Day
Bank holiday. Stores, malls, shopping centers are closed. Only some smaller local convenience stores can be open (eg. Żabka). Stores at gas stations are open every day, 24 h. The May 3rd Constitution was passed in 1791 and is claimed to be the first written constitution in Europe and second one in the world (after the American one). Constitution Day is celebrated with speeches, military parades, picnics.

Polish Constitution Celebrations 
Location: Royal Łazienki Museums and Garden, Agrykola 1 Street. 9 am – 6 pm, free entrance to all the museum and galleries located in Łazienki. Food Truck Festival in Piaseczno

World Dumplings Festival
Location: Garden of Iskra Club at Pole Mokotowskie, Wawelska 5 Street (Mokotów), 12 pm – 7 pm. There will be a chance to buy Polish dumplings (pierogi) as well as “dumplings” from other countries, eg. calzone, samosa, momo, khinkali etc. Facebook event in Polish.

Festival of Carnivorous Plants
Location: Arena Ursynów, Pileckiego 122 Street, 10 am – 4 pm, online tickets. Facebook event in Polish.

Opening of the Summer Season at the Vistula river
Location: Vistula Boulevard / Bulwar Jana Karskiego and Beach close to the Warsaw Zoo in Praga – Plaża Rusałka, 1 pm – 10 pm, free entrance. Concerts, workshops for families, sports competitions. Facebook event in Polish.

Star Wars Day
Location: Nowy Fort, Stefana Czarnieckiego 51 Street (Żoliborz), free entrance, 12 pm – 7 pm. Facebook event in Polish.

Guided tour in English of the “Edi Hila. Painter of Transformation” exhibition

Festival of Japanese Culture HANAMI
Location: Pub Lolek, Pole Mokotowskie, Rokitnicka 20 Street (Mokotów), 10 am – 5 pm, free entrance. Picnic featuring Japanese culture – workshops, shows, food, fashion, dancing, martial arts. Facebook event in Polish and Japanese.

Millennium Docs Against Gravity Festival
The biggest documentary film festival in Poland. Foreign films are screened with Polish subtitles. Most films (all competition films) are screened with English subtitles. The Festival website in English. Facebook event in Polish.

“European City” and the Schuman Parade (Parada Schumana)
Location: Krakowskie Przedmieście Street (close to St. Anna’s Church and the Castle Square), free entrance, 10 am – 3 pm. Pro-European Union event: open-air events like concerts, games, debates. Facebook event in Polish.

“Veggie World” – vegan fair

Sunday trading ban – stores are closed
There are new regulations in Poland – stores can operate only 2 Sundays a month (usually first and last Sunday of the month). In May 2018, there is a trading ban on May 13 and May 20. Trade ban does NOT include cinemas, restaurants, cafés, small local stores where the owner can work, stores at gas stations, flower shops, pharmacies. Shopping malls can be open but most of the stores inside will be closed (only cinemas, restaurants, pharmacies in shopping malls can be open).

Outdoor piano recitals in Łazienki Garden – new season opening
Location: Royal Łazienki Garden, Chopin Monument, entrance from Aleje Ujazdowskie Street, free entrance. Each Sunday 2 live concerts: 12 pm and 4 pm (until the end of September).

Art Fair (Targowisko Sztuki)
Location: Arkady Kubickiego (Kubicki Arcades) at the Warsaw Royal Castle, entrance from Grodzka Street. 11 am – 4 pm, free entrance. Railway Modeling Event (Giełda Modelarska)
Location: Warsaw Railway Museum (Stacja Muzeum), Towarowa 3 Street (Wola), 10 am – 2 pm (the Museum is open on Sundays 9 am – 5 pm). A chance to buy model railways and trains and meet railway modeling enthusiasts. During the event reduced tickets for everyone (6 PLN, children up to 7 free entrance). The Museum website in English. The Night of Museums (Noc Muzeów) 
Over 250 Warsaw institutions are open during the night: galleries, museums, theaters, government buildings. Facebook event in Polish.

Outdoor Breakfast Market in Żoliborz – “Japanese Weekend” (Targ Śniadaniowy)
Location: aleja Wojska Polskiego Street and corner of Śmiała Street, 9 am – 4 pm. Breakfast Market is a weekend picnic where you can buy local, international, and organic food, and rent a picnic blanket. Facebook event in Polish.

Bank holiday (always on Sunday anyway). The Day of Descent of the Holy Spirit – Zielone Świątki (Green Holidays). In Poland, some people decorate their homes with branches with green leaves.

Explore nature – educational walk guided IN ENGLISH
Location: Wilanów Palace Garden, Stanisława Kostki Potockiego 10/16 Street, 11 am – 12.30 pm, meeting point at the ticket office (small yellow building). Click here to buy tickets online (10 PLN). Location: Park Bródnowski (Bródno Park), corner of Kondratowicza and Chodecka Streets, free entrance, 11 am – 8 pm. Historical shows, staged battles, tournaments. Facebook event in Polish.

Corpus Christi / Boże Ciało
Bank holiday. Stores, malls, shopping centers are closed. Only some smaller local convenience stores can be open (eg. Żabka) and stores at gas stations. The catholic church organizes in each parish huge outdoor procession (in many places in Poland traffic is stopped during the processions). The procession stops at four altars temporary built on the streets. The altars are decorated with birch-tree twigs which can be later taken home and are kept the whole year to protect family. Girls dressed in white scatter flower petals.
