Christmas Eve is not a bank holiday in Poland. However, most shops and businesses are open no longer than 2-3 pm.

Christmas illuminations and decorations along Warsaw streets
The main attractions focus on the “The Royal Route”Castle Square/Plac Zamkowy (including the Christmas tree), Krakowskie Przedmieście Street, Nowy Świat Street, Trzech Krzyży Square, Aleje Ujazdowskie Street to Belweder next to the Royal Łazienki Garden. Special Christmas midnight mass (pasterka)
In every church in Poland, there is a special, very ceremonial Christmas Eve mass that usually starts at midnight. You will have a chance to listen to and/or sing Christmas carols during the mass. Check out the locations of churches in Warsaw with services in Polish: Warsaw on the left bank of the Vistula (Mokotów, Ochota, Wola, Ursynów etc.), and Warsaw on the right bank of the Vistula (Praga, Białołęka etc.). If you prefer a mass in English, St. Paul’s English Speaking Catholic Parish of Warsaw (al. A bank holiday in Poland. Stores, malls, shopping centers, public institutions, schools are CLOSED. You can always do basic shopping at gas stations (which are open 24/7).

Visit churches in the Old Town – nativity scenes
Each church builds its own unique nativity scene (szopka) for the Christmas season. Sometimes they are modern and metaphorical, sometimes with lots of details that children will love, eg. animals, angels, different figures, ornaments. Churches in Poland are usually open during the day until the evening. There is also an animated nativity scene with moving statues in Kościół Przemienienia Pańskiego (Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord), Miodowa 13 Street (Old Town). Art Fair (Targowisko Sztuki)
Location: Arkady Kubickiego (Kubicki Arcades) at the Warsaw Royal Castle, entrance from Grodzka Street. 11 am – 4 pm, free entrance. Winter illuminations and shows – the Multimedia Fountain Park
Location: Skwer Dywizji Pancernej (the area between the Old Town and Vistula), free entrance. Starting from December 8, the holiday illuminations at the Fountain Park will be on every day from 3 pm. 15-minutes shows with music each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: 4 pm, 5 pm, 6 pm. Wielka Fabryka Elfów / The Great Elf Factory – indoor Christmas playing areas for children aged 3-10

St. Nicholas’ Day (Mikołajki)
The name Mikołajki comes from Mikołaj (Polish for Nicholas), meaning little Nicholas. Children usually receive little treats – candies or toys. One of the traditions is to hide treats in shoes. Children should clean them the night before and the next morning (on Mikołajki day) they would find inside their shoe a small surprise.

The launch of Christmas illuminations and decorations in Warsaw (20 km of streets)
The lights will be switched on gradually throughout Warsaw starting from dusk, from around 3.30 pm. The main attractions will focus on “The Royal Route”Castle Square/Plac Zamkowy (including the Christmas tree), Krakowskie Przedmieście Street, Nowy Świat Street, Trzech Krzyży Square, Aleje Ujazdowskie Street to Belweder next to the Royal Łazienki Garden. Other locations include The Old Town, Aleje Jerozolimskie Street (from Warszawa Centralna Railway Station to Rondo Waszyngtona Roundabout and Poniatowskiego Bridge), Mokotowska Street, Bankowy Square, Marszałkowska Street (from Królewska Street to Konstytucji Square), Świętokrzyska Street (from ONZ Roundabout to Marszałkowska Street), Targowa Street, Solidarności Street (from Bankowy Square to Wileński Square, including Śląsko-Dąbrowski Bridge). Sunday trading ban – stores are closed
Stores are closed. In December, there is only one Sunday trading ban: December 9, 2018. December 2, 16, 23, and 30 are shopping Sundays. Trade ban does NOT include cinemas, restaurants, cafés, small local stores where the owner can work, stores at gas stations, flower shops, pharmacies. Shopping malls can be open but most of the stores inside will be closed (only cinemas, restaurants, pharmacies in shopping malls can be open). You can always do basic shopping at the gas stations (24/7).

Christmas Party with ‘International Friends of Warsaw’

‘Adventurous Nature Walk’ – educational walk for children and adults guided IN ENGLISH

Christmas Eve is not a bank holiday in Poland. However, most shops and businesses are open no longer than 2-3 pmChristmas Eve Dinner kolacja wigilijna – is the most important Christmas celebration in Poland. New Year’s Eve / St. Silvestre’s Day (Sylwester
Start of the carnival season in Poland. People usually go out to parties and balls. At midnight or even before, fireworks shows start, arranged by the city authorities but also outside of apartments, in parks, playgrounds etc. Stores are usually open no longer than 5-6 pm. Please note it can be difficult to order a taxi on December 31 / January 1. In Warsaw, the New Year’s Eve free party will be organized this year at the Plac Bankowy (Bankowy Square) – Facebook event in Polish. January 1, 2019 is a bank holiday in Poland.
