About the Saxon Garden in Warsaw

The Saxon Garden (Ogród Saski) dates back to the early 18th century. It was a baroque garden in the French style, first public park in Warsaw, located next to the royal Saxon Palace (Pałac Saski). The Palace was blown up by the Nazis in 1944. The Garden was renovated, and now you can admire 21 baroque statues along the main avenue of the Garden, the fountain from the middle of the nineteenth century, sundial, some of the trees are 250-years-old.

How to get there?

  • The Garden is located in the city center, between Marszałkowska Street and Piłsudski Square (Plac Piłsudskiego), 1 km from the Old Town
  • By car: the Garden is within paid parking zone (Monday – Friday 8 am – 6 pm, free on weekends and holidays). Visitors can park on Theatre Square (Plac Teatralny). Please, note, it may take some time to find a free spot
  • By public transport:
    • By metro (M1 or M2): Świętokrzyska stop (requires about 5-minute walk, 500 m)

Where to have lunch or coffee?

  • In the Garden, there is an Italian restaurant – St. Antonio with winter patio and summer garden

Other relevant information:

  • There is a public playground
  • In the Piłsudski Square (Plac Piłsudskiego, the largest square of Warsaw), you will find a monumental cross in the spot where Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass in 1979, just after he was elected pope in 1978. His visit is considered to be an important event in development of the Solidarity movement
